Children master and apply literacy and math skills through learning that emphasizes research, problem solving, simulations and technology. The instructional program goes on to teach the use of those skills in higher-level problem solving. Staff and parents foster mutual cooperation, emotional support, and personal and academic growth for all students. Children benefit from flexible classroom settings, team teaching and communications.

The influence of a highly qualified, motivated and dedicated teacher cannot be overstated. At Heatherwood, our teachers are constantly striving for success and continuous improvement. Their efforts are reflected in the academic achievements of our students and have been regionally and nationally recognized.

This school also offers free and tuition preschool classes that have a focus on both academic and developmental learning standards.

Genna JaramilloHeatherwood Elementary provides a strong educational, social and emotional foundation for students preparing them for success in life! The achievements of Heatherwood can be credited to the true “Partnership in Education” that exists between the highly trained professional staff, dedicated and involved parents, and the wonderful children with whom we work!

Special instructional programs at Heatherwood are Personal Learning Plans (PLP) for identified talented and gifted students; differentiated learning activities for high ability learners; Special Education services for qualifying students; and exceptionally strong art, music and physical education programs.

Heatherwood is host to the Special Education Intensive Learning Center for children with autism spectrum disorder. Heatherwood is home to a BVSD AM/PM Preschool Program. BVSD's Kindergarten Enrichment program operates in the morning and afternoon and Heatherwood houses BVSD's School-Age Care Program (SAC) after school.

The Heatherwood library hosts a staffed summer reading program and is open one day a week throughout the summer funded by our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO.)

Heatherwood has dedicated literacy/intervention teachers who help to provide intensive intervention strategies in reading and writing. Our literacy teachers are able to work with smaller groups and continually assess each child’s needs so that students are supported to progress as rapidly as possible.

Our media specialist works with staff and students to support classroom instruction. A significant aspect of that support is collaboration between the media specialist and teachers in providing instruction through research on content topics that incorporates literacy instruction. The K-5 classes completed 350 research projects. One hundred twenty computers are connected to the Internet. Materials are selected to meet the research and curriculum needs of students and teachers, as well as the personal interests of students.

Special Programs and Opportunities
Heatherwood Elementary offers a wide variety of co-curricular activities that encourage enrichment in all academic areas and the arts education. Where appropriate and feasible, para-educators and student pull-out groups are used to reduce class size and meet individual students’ educational needs.

School Achievement

Heatherwood Elementary has a long and proud reputation for being a consistently high achieving neighborhood school! Test results support that our children are prepared academically with more than 85% of our students consistently performing in the proficient or advanced categories of the Colorado's standardized testing. Heatherwood’s academic strength lies in our balanced and integrated curricular program. Children master and apply literacy and mathematics skills through learning that emphasizes research, problem solving, simulations and technology. The instructional program extends learning through the use of those skills in higher level problem solving. Using classroom based authentic measurements reinforces that our students are academically and socially prepared for success in life.

Academics are only one measure of a successful school. The Heatherwood community values social and emotional growth in addition to strong academic skills. Students are engaged in meaningful opportunities to learn and develop as they become responsible, respectful and contributing members of the community. Heatherwood uses the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBS) model of teaching students how to interact in positive ways, productively resolving conflict as they learn. The nurturing environment allows students to take risks, make mistakes and develop socially through their learning.

Heatherwood Elementary was awarded a third consecutive and seventh overall John Irwin School of Excellence Award from the Colorado Department of Education!
